When I was living in Chicago, circa 1997, my friend Jim Marcus had turned me onto all the artists of Peter Gabriel's on his label Real World Records. Originally, Jim and I were having lengthy discussions about album artwork, and how we wanted to do something like the multi colored bar code on all the Real World Records releases. It makes all the artists a part of something bigger than just one record. These colored bar codes on the spine of the cd's would just catch your eye (if you were still buying cd's). Anyway, I got into the habit of looking for anything with that barcode on it, because chances were, it was Real World Records, and I would love it. I picked up a cd by a Real World Artist (at that time) named Joseph Arthur, not having ever heard of him before. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS ARTIST. He was Peter Gabriel's personal signing, and the only American artist on that label. When I got to actually record my album, Soularium, at Real World Recording Studios, I got to meet a lot of those artists on that label. It's a residential studio, and we (the artists) would live together. In the kitchen, everyday, you could see who was actually staying at the studio, because the chef would write the names of the residents on his erase board. One day, I went to the kitchen, and I saw Joseph Arthur's name on the board. I couldn't believe it. And then, he was right behind me. Joe and I became very close. We spent quite a few weeks living at the studios, writing music together, becoming friends....I wrote this about Joseph Arthur.
lyrics
my man joe is younger than me.
he's my favorite company.
his old soul shows when he doesn't know
it's especially there when he sings
i feel I've known him before
I feel I've known him before.
I saw Joe's mean streak today.
It hurt like hell, but I like him anyway.
I guess its something I understand.
We are sort of cut by the same hands.
It feels like I've known him before.
It feels like I've known him before.
I guess I'll miss him.
I guess I'll miss him.
His music is my song.
Like he knows where my heart has gone.
It holds me from the inside.
It makes me cry.
It feels like I've known him before.
It feels like I've known him before.....
