about

originally written in 1998 and re-written with joe gore in 2000. I was in New Orleans working on a project with Charlie Clouser that was supposed to be called "tapeworm". I was writing to some of his instrumentals and it wasnt going well. I was pretty flowery and poetic in my writing style back then. I hadnt really found my voice yet, and Charlie pretty much hated everything I was doing. I felt really defeated, especially because i was such a huge fan of his whole camp. He finally said, "stella, i cant write about clouds and picnics, everything i write has the word 'fuck' in it..." He left me alone in his studio with his pro-tools rig, and told me to just hit the space bar on his computer when i felt like i had something to record. I had never used pro-tools and i had never cursed in a song before. The only thing i could think of to write, was "fuck this." So i did. And i also learned how to record my own vocals that day :) Later, in 2000, I went to san francisco to work with Joe Gore (PJ Harvey, Tom Waits, etc.) and Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) that we re-worked Fuck That. The song itself, isnt about anyone or anything. But it was a key moment in connecting what I could do with technology, on my own. Thanks to Charlie, I figured out how to bring more to the table than just words on paper. I could now, hand over a session file with my vocals recorded to a click track. When i bought my first M-BOX in 2001, I was pretty good at getting the ideas down and putting them into files. It may sound archaic, but it was liberating for me, to not have to completely depend on other people, in order to create something.

lyrics

darling ever, gonna make up your mind
it aint heaven
open up your eyes
you had better start to recognize
you dont really buy poetic lies
how do you breathe?
when you dont want to leave your old house keys?
how do you sleep?

fuck that.
blue blue are you through?
fuck that.
how is it cutting you?
fuck that.
blue blue are you through.
fuck that.
what's it costing you?
fuck that.

honey better be running for your life
love ain't curing
its a waste of time
are you gonna let them steal your fire?
Not so clever, time to get wise.

how do you breathe?
when you dont want to leave?
your old house keys?
how do you sleep?

fuck that.
blue blue are you through?
fuck that.
how is it cutting you?
fuck that.
blue blue are you through.
fuck that.
what's it costing you?

fuck that.

fuck that. fuck that.

darling? ever gonna make up your mind? it aint heaven. open your eyes. you had better start to recognize you dont really buy poetic lies.

fuck that.
blue blue are you through?
fuck that.
how is it cutting you?
fuck that.
blue blue are you through.
fuck that.
what's it costing you?
fuck that.
